COURSE DESCRIPTION


M.A. History or Master of Arts in History is a postgraduate History course. History includes a comprehensive and thorough study of specialisation in history of some certain time periods of cultures. The course also covers the study of major historical events that took place both in India as well as across the world. Students also are provided Research Skills and Methods, such as research, writing and presentation skills and palaeography, and two additional tailored research skills courses to meet their specific research training needs. Besides of this one, students follow two specialist optional courses and linked historiographical modules to provide the intellectual, conceptual and historiographical framework for their research. M.A. in History is two years duration course and the syllabus is divided into two semesters.


M.A. History Eligibility

  • The basic eligibility criterion for pursuing M.A. (History) degree is graduation with Honours in History or History as one of the subjects studied in graduation from any of the recognised university/college of the country.
  • Some of the very reputed universities and institutes demand a minimum of 50% marks in graduation as qualifying criteria to secure admission in this course and also conduct entrance examination to get admission to their M.A. (History) degree course.
  • Selection to the degree course in these colleges is based on marks secured in the final merit i.e. total marks aggregated in the final exams of graduation and the entrance exam.

M.A. History Course Suitability

  • Candidates those have creative skills like writing history, primary and secondary source analysis and research strategies, critical reasoning and analytical skills, including the capacity for solving problems and thinking creatively, often through extensive reading, etc. are most suitable for it.
  • Second, applicants who can construct an argument by selecting and ordering relevant evidence and then to communicate findings in a structured, clear and persuasive manner, both orally and in writing also are good match for it.
  • Third, who possess the ability to discuss ideas in groups, accommodating different ideas and reaching agreement, the capacity to think objectively and approach problems and new situations with an open mind can go for this course.

  • M.A. (History) degree serves as a basis for further higher studies and research in this field such as Ph.D. and M.Phil. Degree in History. On completion of this degree a student can apply for the NET or JRF exam; the success in these exams makes teaching or research as good option.
  • The M.A. (History) degree study trains students to read intelligently, think analytically, write clearly, accurately assess past trends, rationally predict future developments, thus understanding the real world.
  • The degree course enables the students to develop a deep understanding of the evolution of human civilizations down the ages i.e. from the pre-historic to the recent times.
