COURSE DESCRIPTION


B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture or Bachelor of Science Honours in Agriculture is an undergraduate Agriculture Science and Technology course. Agriculture is a science or practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for the growing of crops and the rearing of animals to provide. The duration of the course is three years (four years program in some colleges). Agriculture includes the study of various methods of agriculture, the use of modern fertilizers for the improvement of crops and the ways to improve the present technique of Agriculture with the help of modern technology. The study under B.Sc. in Agriculture (Honours) includes use of various technological aspects for the betterment of agriculture. The degree course is an important as India’s most of the population are engaged in the sector; it opens many career scopes for the candidates after its successful completion.


B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture Eligibility

  • The basic eligibility criterion for pursuing B.Sc. (Hons) (Agriculture) degree is qualifying 10+2 or equivalent examination, with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as subjects studied at intermediate level. Some reputed colleges and institutes demand a minimum of 50% marks in 10+2 as qualifying criteria to secure admission in this degree course.
  • Some of the very reputed colleges and institutes also conduct entrance examination to get admission to their B.Sc. (Hons) (Agriculture) degree course. Selection to the degree course in these colleges is based on marks secured in the final merit i.e. total marks aggregated in the final exams of 10+2 and the entrance exam.

B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture Course Suitability?

  • They should have good knowledge of science, and be familiar with crops, pastures, soil types, agricultural and horticultural chemicals.
  • They should have a keen and analytical mind, a high level of concentration, an aptitude for research, ability to work as part of a team, abundant physical stamina to put in long hours of work and patience.
  • Other essential skills are good observation skills, communication skill, organizing skills, written and oral skills, the ability to give presentations and knowledge of common business concepts.
  • Candidates also should possess good computer knowledge which is essential to analyse data and to control biological and chemical processing.

  • B.Sc. (Hons) (Agriculture) degree serves as a basis for further higher studies in this field such as M.Sc., Ph.D. and M.Phil. degree in Agriculture, the successful completion of which makes one eligible for the post of a lecturer in any university/college.
  • B.Sc. (Hons) (Agriculture) degree holders are eligible to do M.Sc. Agriculture in any of the large number of specializations such as Agri Botany, Agri Bio-Technology, Agri- Chemistry, Agri Economics, Agri Extension, Agronomy, Agri Engineering, Agri Statistics, Agri Entomology, Forestry, Social forestry, Farming System Management, Horticulture, Micro biology, Plant Physiology, Ecology Plant Pathology, Plant Protection, Sugar Cane Technology, Seed Technology, Soil Science and Soil Conservation, Sericulture, Tea Husbandry, Water Conservation, etc.
  • Candidates also have the option of joining agricultural research centres in government sector.
