COURSE DESCRIPTION

B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology or Bachelor of Science Honours in Biotechnology is an undergraduate Biotechnology course. Biotechnology is an integrated study of the concepts of chemistry, biology, and cell biology and computer sciences. The degree course covers the study of topics from diverse areas like molecular biology, tissue culture, agricultural engineering, fisheries, genetics, gene therapy, drug design, genomics, proteomics, and genetic engineering for plants, animals, micro-organisms, bioinformatics, fermentation technology and medicine. In other words, B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology degree course is a combined study of biology and technology that allows scientists to use genetic technology to develop treatments for diseases and to beneficially alter the genetics of humans as well as other life forms. The duration of the course is three years and the syllabus for the course is divided into six semesters. The course an important one which opens many career scopes after its completion for the candidates.

B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology Eligibility

  • The basic eligibility criteria for pursuing B.Sc. (Hons.) (Biotechnology) degree is qualifying 10+2 or equivalent examination with any three out of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics or Computer Science as subjects studied at intermediate level. Some reputed colleges and institutes demand a minimum of 50% marks in 10+2 as qualifying criteria to secure admission in this degree course.
  • Some of the reputed colleges and institutes also conduct entrance examination to get admission to their B.Sc. (Hons.) (Biotechnology) degree course. Selection to the degree course in these colleges is based on marks secured in the final merit i.e. total marks aggregated in the final exams of 10+2 and the entrance exam.

B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology Course Suitability

  • Candidates should have scientific bent of mind and a keen interest in the biological sciences are the most suitable for it.
  • They should be methodical and patient by nature, able to work neatly and accurately and have an interest with laboratory work.
  • They should have the ability to work independently and ability to use computers in work is another plus point for it.
  • Applicants who are farsighted by nature and want to take up research work in this subject by their innovative mind also can go for this course.

How is B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology Course Beneficial?

  • B.Sc. (Hons.) (Biotechnology) degree serves as a basis for further higher studies in this field such as M.Sc., Ph.D. and M.Phil. Degree in Biotechnology, the successful completion of which makes one eligible for the post of a lecturer in any university/college as well as for an observer or a scientist.
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) (Biotechnology) degree graduates have the options of pursuing a career in various specializations of Biotechnology such as in Medical Biotechnology, Marine Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals, Agricultural, Environmental and Industrial biotechnology.
  • Biotechnology is ranked second as a growth sector after multimedia industry with a tremendous employment potential.
  • Report and analysis suggest that biotech industry may surpass IT in overall growth and employment generation, Forex earnings, patent registration, etc.
