COURSE DESCRIPTION


B.Sc. (Hons) Horticulture or Bachelor of Science Honours in Horticulture is an undergraduate Agriculture Science and Technology course. Horticulture includes the study of the industry and science of plant cultivation particularly fruits, berries, nuts, vegetables, flowers, trees, shrubs, and turf. The study under B.Sc. (Hons) (Horticulture) includes theoretical study including plant identification, field study including basic surveying, technical study involving tools, machinery, hydraulics, safe work practices and Mapping. B.Sc. (Hons) (Horticulture) degree course covers topics such as plant propagation and cultivation, crop production, plant breeding and genetic engineering, plant biochemistry and plant physiology. The duration of the course is three years and it is career orienting in nature.


B.Sc. (Hons) Horticulture Eligibility

  • The basic eligibility criterion for pursuing B.Sc. (Hons) (Horticulture) degree is qualifying 10+2 or equivalent examination, with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as subjects studied at intermediate level. Some reputed colleges and institutes demand a minimum of 50% marks in 10+2 as qualifying criteria to secure admission in this degree course.
  • Some of the very reputed colleges and institutes also conduct entrance examination to get admission to their B.Sc. (Hons) (Horticulture) degree course. Selection to the degree course in these colleges is based on marks secured in the final merit i.e. total marks aggregated in the final exams of 10+2 and the entrance exam.

B.Sc. (Hons) Horticulture Course Suitability

  • They should have the ability to communicate, to provide practical and information in simple language, patience and ability to infuse enthusiasm for learning in students and work for long periods with intense concentration. 
  • Candidates should have a keen analytical mind, and a strong scientific bent, eye for detail etc. which are essential skills for it. 
  • They should be able to do work on their own basis, be part of a team, ability to get on well with people, as also tact and diplomacy. 
  • Applicants must also have practical ability, good powers of observation to detect early signs of disease in plants.

How is B.Sc. (Hons) Horticulture Course Beneficial?

  • Degree serves as a basis for further higher studies in this field such as M.Sc., Ph.D. and M.Phil. Degree in Horticulture, the successful completion of which makes one eligible for the post of a lecturer in any university/college. Degree holders are eligible to do Masters in many specializations of Horticulture such as in Arboriculture, Floriculture, Landscape horticulture, Olericulture, Pomology, Viticulture, Postharvest physiology, etc. 
  • They can have jobs in industry, government or educational institutions or private concerns.
  • Horticulturists can work in wide areas like in agribusiness, arboriculture (planting and care of woody plants), botanical gardens, conservation, crop management, floral design, food chemistry, fruit and vegetable production, garden centres and greenhouses etc.
