COURSE DESCRIPTION


M.A. Anthropology or Master of Arts in Anthropology is a postgraduate Anthropology programme which is awarded after successful completion of a two years program or course that covers comprehensive and thorough study of the evolution of man and the socio-cultural development of humans. The course also covers the study of several branches of anthropology (Socio-cultural, Biological-Physical, Applied, Linguistic and Archaeological) that deals with various aspects of human developments. The duration of the course is two years and it provides many opportunities to them after its successful passing.


M.A. Anthropology Eligibility

  • The basic eligibility criterion for pursuing M.A. (Anthropology) degree is graduation in any stream but many of the colleges demand graduation with Anthropology as the subject studied in graduation from any of the recognised university/college of the country.
  • Some of the very reputed universities and institutes demand a minimum of 50% marks in graduation as qualifying criteria to secure admission in this course and conduct entrance examination to get admission to their M.A. (Anthropology) degree course.
  • Selection to the degree course in these colleges is based on marks secured in the final merit i.e. total marks aggregated in the final exams of graduation and the entrance exam.

M.A. Anthropology Course Suitability

  • Candidates having the qualities of learning and study skills, written communication, analytical and critical skills, ability to gather, assess and interpret data, oral communication and presentation skills, time management, discussion and group work skills are the most suitable for this course.
  • Second, who have good statistical and computing techniques; high level of cultural awareness; clear, logical and independent thinking; organising and planning; problem-solving and constructing an argument are also good match for it.

How is M.A. Anthropology Course Beneficial?

  • Acquiring M.A. (Anthropology) degree with at least 50% marks makes a student eligible for the post of a lecturer in different colleges; though for a position in Government colleges, one should clear the UGC-NET examination or some state level qualifying exams, along with the Master’s degree.
  • M.A. (Anthropology) degree serves as a basis for further higher studies and research in related fields such as Ph.D. and M.Phil. Degree in Anthropology and its several branches (Socio-cultural, Biological-Physical, Applied, Linguistic and Archaeological) that deals with various aspects of human developments.
  • Anthropology is a very interesting subject as it is the study of mankind as a whole, right from its birth till the present-day man. The Master’s degree in Anthropology gives the student vast knowledge of the biological, socio-cultural, pre-historic and every other aspect of human evolution and development.
  • More in the western countries, Anthropologists find employment in the field of medicine, law, business and other professional institutions. The graduates can also find work in various public health programmes, community development activities, etc.
  • Social problems like birth control, labour unrest, juvenile delinquency, mortality rate can be analysed correctly and dealt with the help of information gathered from anthropological studies.
  • Knowledge of Anthropology gained after acquiring M.A. (Anthropology) degree gives one an opportunity to work and relate with people of many groups and cultures and closely interact with them.
