COURSE DESCRIPTION


M.A. Geography or Master of Arts in Geography is a postgraduate Geography course. It is a two years program or the course includes a comprehensive and thorough study of the physical features of the earth and of human activity. In M.A. (Geography), the focus of study is more on social science aspect of the subject i.e. on Human Geography which is an area of study that includes the built environment and how space is created, viewed and managed by humans as well as the influence humans have on the space they occupy. The Syllabus for this course is divided into four semesters. M.A. Geography course is very important and job oriented one.


M.A. Geography Eligibility

  • The basic eligibility criterion for pursuing M.A. (Geography) degree is graduation with Honours in Geography or Geography as one of the subjects studied in graduation from any of the recognised university/college of the country.
  • Some of the very reputed universities and institutes demand a minimum of 50% marks in graduation as qualifying criteria to secure admission in this course and conduct entrance examination to get admission to their M.A. (Geography) degree course. Selection to the degree course in these colleges is based on marks secured in the final merit i.e. total marks aggregated in the final exams of graduation and the entrance exam.

M.A. Geography Course Suitability

  • Candidates those who have skills like analysing and problem-solving, decision-making, critically interpreting data and text, etc. are the most suitable.
  • Second, those have the capability of developing a reasoned argument; have numerical skills, team-working, planning skills, presenting oral are suitable for it.
  • They should also have argument and information skills, communication and technology skills (ICT) including word processing, databases, internet communications, information retrieval and online searches are also good match for it.

How is M.A. Geography Course Beneficial?

  • M.A. (Geography) degree serves as a basis for further higher studies and research in this field such as Ph.D. and M.Phil. Degree in Geography. On completion of this degree a student can apply for the NET or JRF exam; the success in these exams makes teaching or research as good options.
  • M.A. (Geography) degree holders have the options of pursuing a career in various specialisations of Geography. Few of them are Economic, Cultural, Political, Historical, Tourism, Transportation, Regional, Medical Geography and Geomorphology.
  • The course enables them to collect and analyse information, come to an informed conclusion, and make reasoned decisions on a course of action.
