COURSE DESCRIPTION

M.A. Mathematics or Master of Arts in Mathematics is a postgraduate Mathematics course. It includes a comprehensive and thorough study of mathematics as a discipline at an advanced level. The syllabus is divided into four semesters of six months each. During the course, many aspects are to be taken such as art of proving theorems, from both the philosophical and aesthetic points of view, using examples such as non-Euclidean geometries, prime numbers, abstract groups, and uncountable sets. Emphasis will be placed on appreciating the beauty and variety of mathematical ideas. The course will include a survey of important results and unsolved problems that motivate mathematical research. The Masters’ degree course is very valuable and important one due to its job orienting nature and it is two years duration. Almost every college and university is offering this course mainly on regular basis and may be on correspondence basis.

M.A. Mathematics Eligibility

  • The basic eligibility criterion for pursuing M.A. (Mathematics) degree is having graduation degree with Honours in Mathematics or Mathematics as one of the subjects studied in graduation from any of the recognised university/college of the country.
  • Some of the very reputed universities and institutes demand a minimum of 50% marks in graduation as qualifying criteria to secure admission in this course and conduct entrance examination to get admission to their M.A. (Mathematics) degree course. Selection to the degree course in these colleges is based on marks secured in the final merit i.e. total marks aggregated in the final exams of graduation and the entrance exam.

M.A. Mathematics Course Suitability

  • Those who have the capability of analysing and interpreting the resultant data, finding patterns and drawing conclusions; skills in designing and conducting observational and experimental studies and high-level IT skills developed using computer applications to support the subjects you study are the most suitable to go for this course.
  • Second, candidates having the ability to approach problems in an analytical and rigorous way and to formulate theories and apply them to solve problems also good suit for it.
  • Third, who can present mathematical arguments and conclusions with accuracy and clarity and have advanced numeracy skills and the ability to handle and analyse large quantities of data also are suitable for it.

How is M.A. Mathematics Course Beneficial?

  • M.A. (Mathematics) degree serves as a basis for further higher studies and research in this field such as Ph.D. and M.Phil. Degree in Mathematics. On completion of this degree a student can apply for the UGC-NET or JRF exam; the success in these exams makes teaching or research as good options.
  • M.A. (Mathematics) degree is very helpful in attaining other degrees in accounting and statistics, such as ICWA, etc.
  • After successfully completing M.A. (Mathematics) degree course, many job opportunities open in statistics, actuarial sciences, mathematical modelling, cryptography, computer sciences, etc.
