COURSE DESCRIPTION


M.A. Philosophy or Master of Arts in Philosophy is a postgraduate Philosophy course. Philosophy is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality and existence. The course includes a comprehensive and thorough study of Philosophy as a discipline at an advanced level. The post-graduate degree course involves the study of critical and systematic approach and its reliance on reasoned argument to address general problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, truth, beauty, law, justice, validity, mind, and language. The study of M.A. (Philosophy) includes topics such as Moral Philosophy, Problems of Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Theory of Knowledge and Reality, Logic and Language, Ethics, Religion, Philosophy of Mind, etc. M.A. (Philosophy) course is a valuable, important and job orienting one.


M.A. Philosophy Eligibility

  • The basic eligibility criterion for pursuing M.A. (Philosophy) degree is having graduation degree in any stream.
  • However, many of the reputed universities demand graduation degree with Honours in Philosophy or Philosophy as one of the subjects studied in graduation from any of the recognised university/college of the country for admission to M.A. (Philosophy) degree course.
  • Some of the very reputed universities and institutes demand a minimum of 45-50% marks in graduation as qualifying criteria to secure admission in this course and some also conduct entrance examination to get admission to their M.A. (Philosophy) degree course.
  • Selection to the degree course in these colleges is based on marks secured in the final merit i.e. total marks aggregated in the final exams of graduation and the entrance exam.

M.A. Philosophy Course Suitability

  • Those who have the capability of analysing and constructing sound arguments; distinguish fine differences between views and find common ground; present ideas convincingly through well-constructed and systematic arguments are the most suitable for it.
  • Second, who have the talents like writing clearly and persuasively; generate ideas and come up with solutions to problems and be open to new ideas and new ways of thinking are also good match for it.
  • Those who are thinking of going for teaching fields at higher degree level aiming to become teacher/lecturer at school, college and university level both in private and government institutions also are good match for it.

How is M.A. Philosophy Course Beneficial?

  • M.A. (Philosophy) degree serves as a basis for further higher studies and research in this field such as Ph.D. and M.Phil. Degree in Philosophy. On successful completion of this degree a student can apply for the UGC-NET or JRF exam; the success in these exams makes teaching or research as good options.
