M.A. Social Work or Master of Arts in Social Work is postgraduate Social Work course. It covers social work which is a professional and academic discipline committed to the pursuit of social welfare, social change and social justice. The duration of M.A. in Social Work is mostly of two academic years but it varies from institute to institute. Certain institutes offer it as Master of Social Work (M.S.W.). Generally, the minimum time to complete the course is two years. Course is available both in full time and may be provided on part time basis by certain institutes. The curriculum for the course is divided into four semesters plus field work. This Masters’ degree is an important one and provides many job opportunities to the candidates.

• The candidates should complete their B.A. degree under any registered University in Arts stream in Social work (B.S.W., B.A).
• The marks for admission vary from place to place and in some colleges and universities there is an entrance exam for admission.

• Candidates those who have good communication skills, humane in nature and good social dealings are the most suitable for this course.
• Candidates having interest in upgrading the plight of socially backward classes are also good match for it.
• Candidates who have passed their graduation and want to become teacher/lecturer; they will have to have Masters’ degree. So, they are also suitable for it.

How is M.A. Social Work Course Beneficial?

• Clinical Social Work: Clinical social workers take care of the mental and physical health care of needy people. They do psychotherapy and counselling for such people and work with health clinics and hospitals and with agencies or do private practices.
• School Social Work: School social workers who deals with children and teenagers serve as the link between students, families and the school. They understand the problems of children and try to solve them and give counselling for them if necessary and advise teachers on how to cope with difficult students. Sometimes they form associations and groups to deal with children’s problems at school.
• Psychiatric Social Work: The psychiatric social workers deal with mentally disturbed people. It is also referred to as clinical social work as these workers also mostly work with hospitals and clinics.
• Criminology and Correctional Social Work: Criminology and correctional social workers deal with the study of crimes, its causes and prevention. They work among the people in jails, juvenile homes etc.
• Medical Social Work: Medical and public health social worker in other words known as Hospital social worker, works for hospitals, nursing and personal care facilities, individual and family services agencies or local governments. They provide support and counselling to the patients, advise family members, help plan for patients needs after discharge etc.
• Community Organization: Community organizers bring together people with common self-interest. They negotiate and influence the government authority or the organizations.
• Research: They do research on problems and find out solutions for that and help the government and other authority to help the needy people.
• Industrial Social Work: The industrial social workers work among the labourers and find and solve their issues and ensure the welfare of the employees.
