COURSE DESCRIPTION


Ph.D. Library & Information Science or Doctor of Philosophy in Library & Information Science is Doctorate Library Science course. Library and Information science is an interdisciplinary field that applies the practices, perspectives, and tools of management, information technology, education, and other areas to libraries; the collection, organization, preservation, and dissemination of information resources; and the political economy of information. The Doctor of Philosophy in Library and Information Science Program prepares students for advanced work in research, teaching, and administration. Candidate will learn how to conduct independent research through projects that have the potential to change the way people interact with information and to fundamentally impact how society evolves. The minimum duration of the course is two years from the date of registration (3 years for external candidates) and maximum 5-6 years.


Ph.D. Library & Information Science Eligibility    

  • An M.Phil. Degree and a Post-Graduate Degree in a relevant discipline with minimum fifty-five percent marks (fifty percent marks for SC/ST/PH candidates) or an equivalent grade from a university or a recognized institution of higher training
    or
    Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline with minimum fifty-five per cent marks (fifty percent marks for SC/ST/PH candidates) or an equivalent grade from a university or a recognized institution of higher learning and five years of teaching/industry/administration/professional experience at senior level.
  • Candidate should clear the common entrance exam conducted by the University for the Course.

  • Candidates who are interested in Library and Information Science are suitable for it and have an ability or proficiency in execution or performance, which is required for a person to plan and execute an action, designed to achieve some goals or accomplish a task.
  • They should have good communication skills, customer service attitude, methodical approach, organising ability, ability to anticipate user's needs, a wide general knowledge and ability to cope with frequent interruptions. 
  • Applicants should also possess knowledge of a wide variety of scholarly and public information sources, and follow trends related to publishing, computers, and the media to effectively oversee the selection and organization of library materials.

  • Degree course enables the students to organize information involves classification, cataloguing, storage, record keeping, shelving and maintenance of books and materials in a manner to make it easily accessible to readers and users.

  • Candidates can also become library assistant; their main duties are accession, shelf arrangements, levying of fines, maintenance and binding of books and other materials, location of missing books and related technical work.
